Stress Management

(My new pixie - what do you guys think?)

I was at my cousin's salon this weekend getting my hair done when I was told that I was losing a lot more hair than was normal. No new medications, no weird changes with my hair routine... it turns out that stress is the cause. What a slap in the face. I've been trying to hold myself together and put a smile on my face and my body has to go ahead and out me. I haven't been sleeping, I've been having anxiety attacks at night, and now my hair is proving it. I'm using a new tension aromatherapy oil and trying to breathe more. For now, those are the only changes I can make. To hide some of the damage, I went for a pixie. I've wanted to go short again for months anyway, but was thinking of waiting until I went darker so it's not a huge issue for me. In fact, I love it.

Breathe deep...

Currently Loving

I'm feeling a new pixie cut coming on.
These Modcloth heels.
These Alexander McQueen flats.
This fox hat!
These black kitty cookies.
The texture on this wedding gown.

I finally saw Frankenweenie yesterday. It was great, but is it odd to say that I enjoyed the original more? The video above also plays Vincent, another early short film of Tim Burton's.

Shopping Inspiration - Honey Bees

I've always had a special place in my heart for bees. Funny, because things that buzz around and have stingers generally don't tickle my fancy (example: my hatred for wasps). But oh how I love to watch a lazy bee flit from flower to flower. Not the mention, the honeycomb pattern is perfect.

On a recent road trip I read The Secret Life Of Bees by Sue Monk Kidd and found myself mentally highlighting so many quotes - here's a couple of my favorites...

“After you get stung, you can't get unstung
no matter how much you whine about it.”

“women made the best beekeepers 'cause they have
a special ability built into them to love creatures that sting.”

“At night I would lie in bed and watch the show, how bees squeezed through the cracks of my bedroom wall and flew circles around the room, making that propeller sound, a high-pitched zzzzzz that hummed along my skin. I watched their wings shining like bits of chrome in the dark and felt the longing build in my chest. The way those bees flew, not even looking for a flower, just flying for the feel of the wind, split my heart down its seam.”

Obsession : Hair

I've got to get something off my chest. I don't understand why most women are so attached to their hair. Crying when three inches are trimmed off, hissy fits when the tone doesn't come out "right", needing it long to feel like a "woman". I'm not one to understand this phenomenon. I've never been attached to my hair. It grows out of my head. I cut it off and more grows in its place. I bleach it until it falls out (well, I used to do that - my stylist has, thankfully, taken over the bleaching), perfect a shade of blonde and then have red put over it, spend months growing out my bangs and then get them again, get bored and put purple in it... It's just hair!

And yeah, I've had a couple experiences where I panicked about my drastic hair change. Once right after high school when I got my first pixie/faux hawk and I got a lot of rude comments about it, and more recently when I bleached my whole head and people could not let it go. But now I see that the only reason I freaked was because all the negative (and sometimes even positive) attention was making me self conscious. I love change. Change makes me happy. Every time I feel like my life is boring or out of control, I change my hair. It helps! I am in control of it! And, quite frankly, I rock a lot of hair colors and styles.

“A woman who cuts her hair, is about to change her life.” - from the movie Coco Before Chanel

In honor of this venting and realization, I went through Facebook and made a collage of a bunch of hair styles I've had over the past few years. It's odd to see them all together like this. Unfortunately, I was late to the Facebook/photograph yourself all the time train and don't have any pictures of my high school Manic Panic days, but I think you get the idea.

What's your favorite hair style you've ever had? Have you ever craved a drastic change?

Shopping Cruelty Free

It is fairly well known that eating meat has never settled well with me, even when i was very young and didn't know what a vegetarian was. I'm sure it was no surprise to anyone when I cut meat out of my diet nine years ago. Since then, i've also introduced a lot of milk substitutes into my diet and started eating eggs almost exclusively from my own chickens. In the past couple of years i've also started buying products (mostly beauty) that don't test on animals. I won't get into detail about animal testing and all it's horrors, but I will say that unnessary, cruel, and pointless tests are happening to animals in the United States every day. I know that it is easy to turn away and pretend that these things aren't happening or that your purchases don't affect the problem, but they are and they do. For more information on animal testing, take a look at the links at the bottom of this post.

Unfortunately, there are some gray lines when it comes to your shopping trip. Many brands buy ingredients for their cosmetics from other companies that test and then claim that their products are cruelty free. Check the label, if it says something along the lines of "this final product not tested on animals", it's ingredients probably were. Additionally, cosmetics companies seem to change their stance on testing often. L'Oreal, along with Mary Kay and Avon, are currently resuming testing on animals so that they can lawfully expand their sales to China. For the most accurate list of "safe" products, visit the Leaping Bunny Website. Although strict, you can trust that each company with their approval is okay to support. When i started to transition into animal friendly products I was happy to see that many of the things i already used were against testing!

For now, I'm still on the lookout for a good contact solution & nail polish remover. I am hoping to support only cruetly free companies (in all products I buy) once we find a house and are purchasing more of our own cleaning products. I would strongly suggest that anyone with a heart look into the labels of what you are buying at the store!

Does anyone else buy cruetly free? What are some of your favorites? What are the products that you haven't found a good alternative for yet?
